AEO vs SEO for B2B SaaS: what differs and what to do first

Key takeaways
  • SEO aims to rank and earn the click. AEO aims to be cited in an AI answer and still earn the click. Most of the underlying work is shared.
  • Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no optimization beyond normal search eligibility.
  • AEO adds work outside Google: allowing OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and tracking citations across AI tools.
  • In this site's view, B2B SaaS teams should treat AEO as an extension of SEO, not a separate program.

SEO aims to rank a page and earn the click. AEO, or answer engine optimization, aims to have the page cited in an AI answer and still earn the click. Most of the work is shared: Google says its AI features need nothing beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet. AEO adds three things: crawler access for AI tools outside Google, pages whose answers can be quoted on their own, and tracking citations as well as rankings.

Platform rules on this page come from Google Search Central and the crawler documentation of OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity, read in October 2026. Click figures come from Ahrefs (February 4, 2026) and Seer Interactive (April 24, 2026). The verdict at the end is this site's editorial view.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO for B2B SaaS?

The table compares them on the points that matter to a B2B SaaS team.

SEO AEO
Goal Rank in search results and earn the click Be cited in AI answers and earn the click
Where results appear Google and Bing result pages Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and others
Crawlers to allow Googlebot, Bingbot Those, plus OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot
Documented requirements Crawlable, indexable, eligible content For Google, the same; for others, crawler access
Page work Relevance, quality, internal links, page experience The same, with answers that can be quoted alone
Measured by Rankings, clicks, traffic, conversions Citations, accuracy of mentions, clicks from AI tools
Main tool Search Console A fixed question set run in each AI tool

The overlap is most of the table. The differences are at the edges: more crawlers, a different unit of success and a new way of measuring it.

What do the platforms say?

That ordinary search eligibility is the main requirement. Google's AI features page: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." Pages must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet."

The other platforms document crawler access, not content rules:

  • OpenAI: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."
  • Anthropic: blocking Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site's visibility in user search results.
  • Perplexity: recommends allowing PerplexityBot, which surfaces and links sites in its results.

None publishes a list of content formats that earn citations. Crawler rules are on the AI crawlers page.

Why does AEO matter if SEO covers most of it?

Because clicks from search are changing. Ahrefs found that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, across 300,000 keywords. A page can hold its ranking and still lose most of its clicks.

Seer Interactive's data shows the part AEO can influence. Across 53 brands in 2025, informational queries where the brand was cited in the AI Overview had 2.07% organic click-through rate, against 0.94% where it was not. Seer notes that "higher-authority brands are also more likely to be cited," so brand authority and citation tend to go together. The full data is in AI Overviews and click-through rate.

Where does the page work differ?

In how answers are written, more than in technical markup. A page built for SEO can bury the answer below an introduction and still rank. A page built to be quoted puts the answer first, in a passage that makes sense on its own.

Page element SEO habit AEO adjustment
Opening Context first, answer later Answer in the first lines
Sections Topic headings Question headings, each answered at the start
Numbers In prose or images In text, with source and date beside them
FAQ Often added for rich results Kept for readers; Google ended FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026
Structured data Used for rich results Must still match the visible text, as Google asks

These adjustments are editorial practice. No study with a stated sample read for this site shows that a format causes citation. More is on the page structure page.

Where does measurement differ?

AEO needs a measure SEO tools do not provide. Google says AI feature traffic is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," under the Web search type, so Search Console cannot show citations or AI Overview clicks on their own.

The AEO measure is a fixed set of buyer questions, run in each AI tool monthly, recording whether the brand is cited, whether it is described correctly and which competitors appear. The method is in how to track AI search citations.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

Not on the evidence read. Google's AI features draw from indexed, snippet-eligible pages, so SEO decides what is available to cite. Gartner predicted in February 2024 that "traditional search engine volume will drop 25%" by 2026, which describes a shift in share, and it was a forecast, not a measurement.

Gartner's analyst also said companies "will need to focus on producing unique content that is useful to customers and prospective customers." That advice serves both.

Which should a B2B SaaS company prioritize?

In this site's view, AEO should be treated as an extension of SEO, not a separate program. The order of work:

  1. Fix the shared foundations. Crawling, indexing, page speed and clear content serve both.
  2. Open access to AI crawlers. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and check the CDN.
  3. Rewrite key pages answer-first. Start with category, comparison, pricing and documentation pages.
  4. Add citation tracking alongside rankings and traffic.

A separate AEO team or budget makes sense mainly when SEO is already strong and the questions buyers ask AI tools differ clearly from those they type into Google.

FAQ

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Broadly. GEO, or generative engine optimization, and AEO, or answer engine optimization, are both used for making content easy for AI search tools to find, read and cite. Some writers draw distinctions between them, but the practical work, crawler access, clear answers and citation tracking, is the same.

Does good SEO lead to AI citations?

It is a prerequisite for Google. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no other requirements. Seer Interactive notes that higher-authority brands are more likely to be cited, which suggests authority and citation go together.

Does AEO need different keywords from SEO?

Often longer, more conversational questions. Buyers may ask AI tools full questions, such as which CRM suits a 50-person sales team, rather than short keyword phrases. Building the tracking question set from sales calls and support tickets helps capture how buyers actually ask.

Can a page rank well in Google but not be cited in AI Overviews?

Yes. Ranking and being chosen as a source are separate outcomes. Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlate with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, which shows a top ranking does not guarantee the click. Seer's data shows cited brands had higher click-through rates than brands not cited.

Should a B2B SaaS company hire separately for AEO?

Usually not at first. Most AEO work, crawler access, clear answer-first pages and tracking, fits within an existing SEO and content team. Separate investment makes more sense once SEO is strong and citation tracking shows clear gaps that need dedicated content work.

Conclusion

AEO and SEO share most of their foundations. Google says its AI features need nothing beyond normal search eligibility, and other AI tools mainly require crawler access. AEO adds AI crawlers, answer-first pages and citation tracking. The click data explains why it matters: AI Overviews correlate with far fewer clicks, and being cited is associated with more clicks than not being cited. In this site's view, B2B SaaS teams should run AEO as an extension of SEO.
