Tracking AI search visibility for B2B SaaS: citations and traffic
By asking the same set of buyer questions in each AI tool every month and recording what comes back: whether the brand is cited, whether it is described correctly, and which competitors appear. Analytics fills in the rest. Server logs show whether AI crawlers reach the site, and referral data shows visits from AI tools that link out. Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside its normal Web totals, so it cannot show it separately.
Ask the same buyer questions in each AI tool every month and record citations, accuracy and competitors.
Seer found a 67% fall in organic CTR during 2025 where an AI Overview appeared and the brand was not cited.
Single answers. AI responses vary between runs, so one check proves little. Track the same set over months.
Write down the 20 questions a buyer asks before shortlisting a product in the category.
How can a B2B SaaS company track its visibility in AI search?
With three sources of evidence, each answering a different question.
| Source | What it shows | What it cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly question set | Whether AI tools cite the brand, and how they describe it | How often real buyers see those answers |
| Server logs | Whether AI crawlers reach and read the site | Whether the content is then cited |
| Analytics and Search Console | Visits from AI tools that link out, and total Google traffic | AI Overview clicks separately from other Google clicks |
None is complete alone. Together they show whether the site is reachable, whether it is cited and whether citations bring visits.
How does a monthly citation audit work?
The method published by GrowthSpree in 2026 has five steps. It reports no results, so it is a process to follow, not a benchmark.
- Define the questions. At least 20 category questions buyers ask, covering discovery, comparison, use cases, validation and pricing. Review the list each quarter.
- Run them in each tool. The method names ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Bing Copilot, run monthly.
- Record citations. The share of questions where the brand appears as a source.
- Check accuracy. Whether the tool describes the brand's product, positioning and pricing tier correctly.
- Record competitors. Which competitors appear with the brand, and which appear without it.
Google AI Overviews can be added to the same list by searching each question in Google and noting the sources shown. The full setup is in how to track AI search citations.
Why does a single check prove little?
Because AI answers change. The same question can return different sources from one run to the next, and tools update their models and search systems often. A brand cited once may not be cited the next day.
Three habits make the results more reliable.
- Keep the question set fixed between months, so changes reflect the tools and the site, not the questions.
- Run each question more than once where possible, and record how often the brand appears.
- Note the date and the tool's mode, since answers with web search turned on differ from those without it.
What can analytics and Search Console show?
Less than most teams want. Google says traffic from AI features is "included in the overall search traffic in Search Console," in the Performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate AI Overview filter in the documentation read.
Practical signals still exist:
- Click-through rate at stable positions. A falling rate on informational queries while positions hold points to AI Overviews or other search features.
- Referral visits from AI tools. AI tools that link to sources can send visits that show in analytics as referrals.
- Branded search. A rise in searches for the brand name can follow being cited, though many other things affect it too.
Seer Interactive's data shows why the click side matters. Where an AI Overview appeared and the brand was not cited, organic click-through rate "declined by 67% over 2025." The full click data is on the AI search and clicks page.
How do server logs help?
They confirm that AI crawlers can reach the site. The search crawlers documented by the AI companies include OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Claude-SearchBot for Claude and PerplexityBot for Perplexity. If none of them appear in the logs, or they appear with blocked or error responses, content work is unlikely to lead to citations.
A CDN or firewall can block crawlers that robots.txt allows. Google's guidance lists checking access "by any CDN or hosting infrastructure" as well as robots.txt. Crawler rules are on the AI crawlers page.
What should be done with the results?
Turn gaps into content work. The audit shows three kinds of gap, each with its own fix.
| Gap | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Brand never cited for a question | No page answers it directly | Write or rewrite a page that answers it in the opening lines |
| Brand described wrongly | Old or unclear information on the site or elsewhere | Correct the site's own pages first, then other public listings |
| Competitor cited instead | Their page answers the question more clearly | Compare the two pages and close the gap honestly |
The page-level guidance is on the page structure page. Results should be compared month to month, not judged on a single run.
Frequently asked questions
How can a brand check whether ChatGPT cites it?
By asking ChatGPT, with search turned on, the questions buyers ask about the category, and noting whether the brand's pages appear as sources. Doing this monthly with a fixed set of at least 20 questions gives a trend. OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, must be allowed for the site to appear in search answers.
Can Google Search Console show AI Overview clicks?
Not separately. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type. Teams can watch click-through rate at stable positions and check key queries by hand to see whether an AI Overview appears.
How many questions should an AI visibility audit include?
One published method suggests at least 20 category questions, covering discovery, comparison, use cases, validation and pricing, reviewed each quarter. The right number is whatever covers the questions buyers ask before shortlisting. A fixed set matters more than a large one, because it allows month-to-month comparison.
Which AI tools should a B2B SaaS company track?
The ones its buyers use. One published method checks ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Bing Copilot monthly, and Google AI Overviews can be added by searching the same questions in Google. Server logs show which AI crawlers already visit the site.
Do AI visibility tools give reliable numbers?
They give useful trends, with limits. AI answers vary between runs and change as tools update, so any single measurement is a sample. Tools that run the same questions repeatedly and report the share of runs citing the brand are more reliable than one-off checks.
